Product design “Cross” of the Croatian Mint
product design / packaging
For the Croatian Monetary Institute, we designed the product design, the concept of gift packaging for medals, and the overall communication and design of individual product lines. The project involved designing a packaging that would be applicable for various gift medals, different products, and product lines of Croatian Mint what would give the product added value and communicate to a wider audience, not just collectors.
The solution is a gift box and display package in one, since this type of present is mainly given at celebrations and often proudly shown to all guests.
The packaging is a hardcover box, with visible silver or gold details, depending on whether the package is holding a gold or silver medal. The design of the medal is merging with the graphic on the display stand on the packaging, making the packaging an inseparable part and complete gift product.
The project also included the designing of the product itself, medal together with the packaging. The task for this particular product was to design a gift for Christian occasions (baptism, first Communion, etc.). The solution is a “Cross” medal with more modern form and design, which is integrated with the traditional style illustration – cross in a landscape imbued with a spiritual experience, together with St. Francis of Assisi’s message “For it is in giving that we receive.”
The Regular edition is produced by combining offset and hot foil stamping, while the Special Limited Edition series has 40 signed lids with the reproduction of a copper etching made by a printmaking fine arts artist, as well as a silver foil stamped on top of it.
With this Special Limited Edition reproduction, every box becomes a unique art specimen. This way, the packaging itself becomes an exhibit of special value, not just a “wrapper” for the gift medal it holds within.

The project also includes product design – the medal that is planned to be produced as gold or silver medals.
The front of the medal is a contemporary interpretation of the basic Christian symbol – the cross, while the back is intended for personalization. The design uses a contrast of glossy and matte surfaces and a subtle engraved structure to show the layering of the theme within a pure geometric form.
.
The packaging design development process gives added value to the product. The originally made illustration was transferred to the lid of the box, and in a limited edition it was produced as a signed author’s work of art.
